Jay-Z’s birthday gift to wife Beyonce is a Private Island. The owner of a private island off Big Pine Key did little Friday to dispel widespread rumors that rap mogul and entrepreneur Jay-Z bought the 12.5-acre property as a birthday gift for his wife, R&B and pop star Beyonce Knowles.
Asked Friday whether Jay-Z purchased the island for Knowles, who turned 29 on Sept. 4, Ideal Investments Inc. owner Mike Miller offered up nothing outside the fact that he — Miller — does own the property.
It’s known as Hopkins Island, and is listed for sale for $19 million — $1.52 million per acre — on the Web site of Ideal Investments, based in Hilliard, Ohio. “At this time I am not allowed to comment on anything,” Miller said.
Widespread reports have the purchase price of the island, which lies 2.5 miles off Big Pine just off Little Palm Island, as high as $20 million. But according to Assistant Monroe County Property Appraiser Karl Borglum, that would be quite the haul for Miller.
Borglum said that his office valued Hopkins Island this year at $1.26 million. Miller purchased it in May 2007 for $2.5 million.
Borglum said he’s seen no documents confirming the island’s sale.
“I can’t confirm whether the sale has taken place or how much money has changed hands. Until some concrete information [comes in], we’re reading it in the newspapers like everyone else,” he said.
And if Jay-Z, 40, is looking for a better price on private islands, there are plenty more from which to choose.
“In fact, every other island with a house south of the Seven Mile Bridge was for sale last year,” Borglum said, estimating the number to be just under 20.
Jay-Z’s allegedly inflated purchase price of Hopkins Island isn’t buying much in the way of living space, either. Borglum said the island has only an 1,800-square-foot main house and a 443-square-foot guest cottage. There’s also a pool.
According to www.privateislandsonline.com, the property is powered by four 24-volt Hawker Power Safes that are charged by photovoltaic solar panels and a backup generator. Captured rainwater is complemented with water from a reverse-osmosis system that can produce 1,200 gallons a day.
Jay-Z is one of the more successful rap artists in recent memory. www.Forbes.com reported in 2009 he is worth $150 million.
In addition to his music career, Jay-Z — real name: Shawn Carter — is a former Def Jam Records executive, co-owns the New York sports bar 40/40 Club, owns a stake in the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and created the Rocawear clothing label that sold for $204 million.
