Beyonce Darkens Her Skin for 'L'Officiel Paris'

Lightening African American celebrities' skin in the media has garnered controversy in the past, as has Caucasian models sporting blackface. But what about an already African American celebrity purposely darkening her skin? For the 90th Anniversay issue of L'Officiel this March, Beyonce donned makeup to appear darker in an African-themed spread.

In the photos and on the cover, she wears tribal and African-inspired pieces, some designed by her mother. The controversial shot is where she agreed to have her face painted darker and decorated with tribal make-up as a tribute to musician Fela Kuti. L'Officiel released this statement about the shoot:
Far from the glamorous Sasha Fierce, the beauty posed for the magazine with amazing fashion designers clothes, but also in a dress created by her mother. A return to her African roots, as you can see on the picture, on which her face was voluntarily darkened. All the pictures will be available in the collector edition, on sell at the end of this month.
What do you think, is Beyonce darkening her skin purely artistic expression or just as controversial as all other skin changing stunts?
