Lady Gaga Launches Born This Way Foundation.

Lady Gaga has built a career on standing out in all her weird glory and frequently uses her fame to teach fans to love who they are and embrace their individuality. Now, the pop star is transforming her message of encouragement into something more official and organized.

Gaga braved the New England snow as she arrived at Harvard to launch her new Born This Way Foundation, aimed at empowering young people. The singer was joined by some powerful friends, as she was flanked by Oprah Winfrey, Deepak Chopra, and Kathleen Sebelius to help usher in the non-profit foundation.

As their mission statement reads, the Born This Way Foundation is "dedicated to creating a safe community that helps connect young people with the skills and opportunities they need to build a braver, kinder world. We believe that everyone has the right to feel safe, to be empowered and to make a difference in the world. Together, we will move towards acceptance, bravery, and love."

Gaga isn't just the face of the new foundation; she's donated more than $1.2 million of her own money to the cause. As she spoke to the crowd gathered at the prestigious university, Gaga touched on the responsibility she feels when it comes to outreach: "I believe that if you have revolutionary potential, you must make the world a better place and use it."

Gaga also thanked her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, who inspired her to start the foundation and who will help run it. “She is the sole reason that I am here today. She has always believed in me. She has always been my support, and she makes me want to inject that sense of family and support into the world,” Gaga said.
