Born in Somalia, Ubah Hassan immigrated to Canada at age 10. After signing to Click Management in New York, Ubah Hassan appeared in Allure editorial, Italian Vogue and has walked for Ralph Lauren in New York.
“Ubah is 5’11”, measurements: bust 32”, waist 24”, hips 34”. Practically speaking, the vast majority of women can’t look like Uban Hassan if they tried.” - Anne of Carversville.
Ubah Hassan is an unlikely face for Ralph Lauren — the quintessential American brand that’s obsessed with Polo and other fancies of the white uppercrust. Born in Somalia, she moved to Canada in 1997 and took up modeling as a teen — but was forbade by her father, who cited her wild nights out as unhealthy. She opened a cafe. But… she started again. And Steven Meisel tugged her over for the famous all-black issue of Italian Vogue. And Ralph Lauren cast his eye on her… And she became the face of a decidely less WASP-y ad campaign.
Hassan sat with modeling legend Iman (and wife of David Bowie!) to discuss their shared homeland and the issues facing black models. “It’s very upsetting.” Ubah replied, “If I was a designer, I would want a black girl on the runway. We look good in any color you put us in.”
