Johnny Depp has to be chuckling to himself over his latest honor. He has been awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Fashion Icon Award, which will be presented to him at the group’s grand gala in June. Johnny will join the ranks of past winners: Last year's Lady Gaga, preceded by David Bowie's supermodel wife Iman, Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman, and his former girlfriend, British supermodel Kate Moss.
The actor has always shunned designer names, preferring to shop vintage and express his personality (personalities?) through his wardrobe. He's often borrowed elements from friends such as the Rolling Stone's Keith Richards and goth rocker Marilyn Manson. He's also presented himself as an Edwardian dandy, a rock star, a pirate, a cowboy, a French gangster, with clothing and accessories seeming to mimic that of his latest onscreen persona.
His favorite accessories: tinted lavender shades from Retrospecs on Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood. He also favors scarves, fedoras, cowboy hats, assorted rawhide bracelets, multiple chains and skull rings, vests, suspenders, etc. Often his clothing -- and always his shoes -- look like they've been worn around the block, with MIA buttons, holes, shredded seams and serious scuffs. One could call him a study in disheveled bohemian chic.
But don't think Depp doesn't appreciate good fashion design. He has it in his contract that he gets to keep all of his film costumes and -- according to his longtime costume designer Colleen Atwood -- has them properly stored and cataloged in a secret Santa Monica warehouse. We have to wonder if Depp will be influenced by one his two latest roles -- the dead crow-wearing Tonto in The Lone Ranger or the vampire Barnabas Colllins in Dark Shadows -- for his awards ensemble.
CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg and CEO Steven Kolb also announced the nominees for womenswear designer of the year: Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen for The Row, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs.
"This year, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the CFDA, we can see what a critical role the CFDA Fashion Awards continue to play in our efforts to promote American Fashion," Kolb said. "This year's nominees truly represent the important influence of American design. We look forward to once again honoring the best and brightest talent working today."
Top contenders in menswear are Billy Reid, Patrik Ervell and Simon Spurr, and for the best in accessory design, it's between Alexander Wang, Reed Krakoff and McCollough and Hernandez. Tommy Hilfiger is set to receive a well-deserved lifetime achievement award.
The ceremony will be held at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts' Alice Tully Hall. But the best news of all is that Saturday Night Live’s "Weekend Update" anchor Seth Meyers will be the evening's host.
Other honorees will include:
Swarovski Award for emerging talent in womenswear: Chris Peters and Shane Gabier for Creatures of the Wind, Joseph Altuzarra, Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty for Suno.
Emerging talent in menswear: Antonio Azzuolo, Phillip Lim and Todd Snyder.
Emerging talent in accessories: Irene Neuwirth, Pamela Love and Tabitha Simmons.
Media award: Scott Schuman and Garance Dore.
Founders award: Andrew Rosen.
International award: Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garcons.
